The whole purpose of marketing is to reach out to customers to allow them to view your call to action and change their behaviour in some way or another. Now this is all the better if you can reach them in a place that they are already active and engaged – after all that saves you even more work, so there’s nothing to lose right? Let’s have a look at some facts shall we (because everyone loves looking at good hard data!) Last year, the consumption of media on mobile devices exceeded online for the first time ever with over 100 million daily active users. That’s 1.6 billion daily likes and 20 billion photos shared every, single, day!
When it comes to deciding which social media platform you should create for your business, it is crucial to set and understand your target market. Facebook is of course the one size fits all platform as it appeals to all age groups, from 13 and upwards, but social media will always be most beneficial if your target audience is millennials. Millennials (or those born between 1977 and 1994) are the generation that technology grew up with, they are masters of social networking and send a median of 50 texts a day! (As I am writing this I realise I myself am I millennial, and I send a lot more than 50 texts a day – but everyone is different!)
So, how does Instagram stack up against the other platforms? Well, social media is all about encouraging interaction and engagement with your audience. It’s all well and good for people to be seeing your posts, but if they are just passive observers it isn’t really going to get you anywhere in terms of growing your business. Instagram users are 58 times more likely to like, comment and share a brands posts than Facebook users, and 120 times more likely than Twitter users. Every like, comment and share from your followers means your brand is visible to their followers and if they then engage, to their followers and so on. All of this indicates that users are moving away from Facebook and Twitter and turning their attention to Instagram – and so if your business is not using it, then you are missing out.
The reason for this unusual level of high engagement is that people nowadays feel the need to visually share their stories and Instagram offers users this opportunity. Instagram has the unique opportunity for its users to share high quality visual content – and all marketers know that visual content is king! Not only that but you can show your personality as a brand. Every business has a story and a personality that they should convey to the public. For example, do you have an office mascot? Do you celebrate birthdays? Got your decorations up for Christmas? All of these things are perfect to be sharing with your audience. Relevant hashtags on these seemingly irrelevant posts, will draw in followers to like and share your page – they will be able to empathise with your brand and that is what makes people stay following a page, as it keeps things interesting.
